My mid-life decision to become a sport pilot after having been a private pilot for 50 years became a reality in July, 2008, as I took delivery of my new Sting S3. To become better acquainted with the new airplane, I traveled to the North Little Rock Municipal Airport (KORK) to actually greet the container when in arrived from the factory in the Czech Republic. Afterward, I assisted Bill Canino and Mark Miller in the final assembly and adjustments to my new dream-maker, N35ER.
It was quite an exciting day, to say the least. The truck arrived at 6:00 AM sharp. We unloaded two Sting airplanes. Of course, I persuaded the fellows to assemble mine first.
I learned much about the inner workings of the airplane as I watched Mark and Bill attach, assemble and adjust the various cables, wires andparts. It wasn't long before we were flying N35ER.

What a joy! Over the course of the next few days I fine-tuned my skills of flying a sport airplane with Tony Darby, CFI. The overall experience was both educational and wonderful.
After fueling both the main and auxiliary tanks, I was ready for my first cross-country flight. My intention was to fly non-stop to my home base of Auburn, Indiana (GWB), however, my bladder said otherwise. Thus, with a bit of a headwind and one quick stop, I used 27 gallons of fuel in 6 hours to fly 522 nautical miles, average 4.5 gallons per hour.
I would be remiss if I did not thank the wonderful personnel at SportairUSA for their kindness, consideration and patience. While I was anxiously taking delivery of my airplane, Bill was knee-deep with insurance and contractors to make repairs after the terrible tornado which did extensive damage to his facilities. Also, along with scheduling the delivery of two more Sting airplanes as well as getting ready for Oshkosh. I'm sure they were delighted to see me finally depart!
By the way, did I say thanks to the FAA for finally releasing me from the annual "physical" albatross?
